January 3 will always hold a special place in my heart, or a broken place perhaps. Chewie, the inspiration behind so much of what I do now, was born on January 3, 1997. I met him as the shy pug in the window on Christopher Street, where I lived in the purple building. When I brought him home, I learned he wasn't shy at all. He very quickly became my whole world!
In 1999, we jokingly made some Pug Life shirts for a party and the fun was born. Chewie's main brand tho was Ask Chewie....as in Ask Chewie, He knows and What Would Chewie Do. There is a play on words there if you know Spanish, but we had a ton of fun making pug-themed stuff. From selling hand screened t-shirts at farmer's market to learning how to make candles, it's been a ride. We had a ton of fun with Cafepress for a while, and that really propelled the Ask Chewie and Pug Life brands. We owe everything to that little pug from the window.
A NYC dog from the start, he enjoyed the beaches of San Diego and Santa Monica, and put up with the rain in Seattle. He lived a long and wonderful 17 years, and not a day goes by that I don't think about him. But today is always the worst of those days.
